Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is a major component of skin, where it is involved in tissue repair, and contributes to tissue hydrodynamics, movement and proliferation of skin cells. When skin is excessively exposed to UVB rays, it becomes inflamed (sunburned) and the cells in the dermis (skin) stop producing as much Hyaluronic Acid, and increase the rate of its degradation. Hyaluronic acid degradation products also accumulate in the skin after UV exposure.

The chemical structure of hyaluronic acid was determined in the 1950s in the laboratory of Karl Meyer. Hyaluronic acid is a polymer of disaccharides, composed of D-glucuronic acid and D-N-acetylglucosamine.  The nomenclature is derived from hyalos (Greek for vitreous) and uronic acid because it was first isolated from the vitreous humor and possesses a high uronic acid content.

Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in many tissues of the body, such as skin, cartilage, and the vitreous humor of the eye.  It is therefore well suited to biomedical applications targeting these tissues. The first hyaluronic acid biomedical product, Healon, was developed in the 1970s and 1980s, and is approved for use in eye surgery (e.g., corneal transplantation, cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery and surgery to repair retinal detachment).

Hyaluronic Acid is a major constituent of the extra-cellular matrix surrounding rapidly dividing cells. It has been shown to be an integral component in the rapid and scar-less wound healing observed in fetal and neonatal organisms. In addition, the cellular actions precipitated by Hyaluronic Acid are integral to the seemingly magical biochemistry of fetal development.

It is well documented that fetal tissues contain large amounts of Hyaluronic Acid and that decreasing Hyaluronic Acid content correlates with aging and wrinkling. Therefore, practical anti-aging attempts to prolong and recapture youth by revitalizing damaged tissue should include this molecule.

Hyaluronic acid is a Macromolecule that is part of the extracellular matrix and is produced in higher quantities during the proliferation phase of wound healing. Besides providing structural support in the wound, topical hyaluronic acid has been shown to speed healing of skin wounds in animal models. It has also improved healing rate in chronic venous leg ulcerations. Hyaluronic acid plays a role in the inflammatory phase of wound healing by up-regulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines as well as enhancing the chemotaxis of fibroblasts to the wound. Low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid used as a topical cream has been shown to protect newly formed granulation tissue from oxidative damage by functioning as a free-radical scavenger.

Mango Madness Skin Care products that contain Hyaluronic Acid include Maximum Moisture, Mango Miracle Daily Facial Moisturizer, Refresh Me Under Eye Cream, Green Tea Antioxidant Facial Cream, and Peptide 6.  An advanced skin moisturizer, Hyaluronic Acid is very effective for reducing wrinkles and fine lines.

Whether you spell it hyluronic, hyaloronic, hylaronic, or hyaluronate, Hyaluronic Acid cream is the ideal way to moisturize your skin, help reduce wrinkles and fine lines, and help reverse the effects of aging.
