SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The entire line of skin care products from anti-aging product retailer Mango Madness Skin Care is now 100% paraben free.

Parabens, which are inexpensive preservatives used in many skin care products, have been linked to health risks in women.  Some parabens have also been shown to accelerate skin aging when exposed to sunlight. Paraben-free products are therefore gaining popularity as consumers learn about the health risks and aging effects associated with these compounds.  

The main health concern with parabens is that they have characteristics that mimic estrogens. In high doses, parabens can affect the concentration of serum (blood) hormones. Depending on the type of alcohol they are formulated with, parabens contain prefixes such as methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl. Because these synthetic chemicals are present in a large number of various consumer products, exposure risk can be significant.  Parabens are absorbed through the skin and stored in body tissue.

In a 2006 study published in the medical journal Toxicology, researchers at Kyoto University in Japan discovered that methylparaben can increase skin aging when exposed to ultraviolet light.  According to the authors, “These results indicate that methylparaben, which has been considered a safe preservative in cosmetics, may have harmful effects on human skin when exposed to sunlight.” Thus, anti-aging skin care products containing methylparaben may actually cause more skin aging, not less.
