Are you moisturizing in the summer?

While it’s true that more moisturizers are purchased and used in the winter months when humidity is lower, and indoor heat makes the air even drier, it is just as important to use a good moisturizer in the summertime.

Why is this? There are two reasons you need to moisturize in the humid, summer months. One is because on those hot days, most of us are either in an air conditioned car, office or house.  Besides cooling, air conditioners also dry the air out. Dry air is the enemy of healthy skin and will make crow’s feet, lines and wrinkles more visible.

The second reason is that when it’s hot, our skin perspires to keep us cool by evaporation.  However, the moisture from perspiration is a saline (salty) solution, and salt dries out your skin as the perspiration evaporates. In addition, where you need the moisture isn’t on the outside of your skin, it is deep within the outer layer of skin.  On top of this, the strong summer sun will also dry out your skin. If you don’t have sufficient moisture in the deeper layers, you will not be maintaining optimum skin health, plus lines and wrinkles will be more apparent.

A good hyaluronic acid moisturizer, either as a serum or a cream, is best for your skin in the summer months.  So, moisturize all year around for healthy skin. And healthy skin is younger looking skin.

Skin care tip: moisturizers and all anti-aging skin care products perform much better if you prepare your skin first by exfoliating with a good glycolic acid wash.
