Out with the Old, in with the New

Did you know? Exfoliating encourages your skin to renew and regenerate. That’s right, doing something simple like exfoliating can help your skin grow more beautiful. Not just because you have scrubbed away the dull dry skin cells, but also because by doing that you have exposed the next layer of skin to the world and encouraged the production of more collagen and more skin cells.

And the good news is, you have many options open to you on how you exfoliate. Many people like the method that involves small abrasive particles. Our Oh Honey Amber and Honey scrub falls into that category. Many other people prefer our all organic Glycolic Acid gel which gently chemically peels away the dry, lifeless skin cells with a formula derived from pure, natural, organic sugar cane. It leaves your skin feeling fresh and delicious. It’s gentle enough to use regularly, and effective enough that we recommend it to our customers that have acne.

What can it do for you? It can:

  • help minimize age spots and produce a more even skin tone
  • reduce wrinkles by removing dry skin
  • build collagen
  • reduce acne so you feel more competent
  • assist makeup and sun screen to go on more evenly

Additionally, once you exfoliate your skin is better able to absorb and utilize the beneficial ingredients in eye cream, face cream, and moisturizers. You will find your make-up glides right on with no caking or clogging your pores.

Renewing and Refreshing Your Skin

You know all the reasons that you should exfoliate:

  • Dead skin cells look dull, feel rough.
  • Dead skin cells block applied hydration and nutrients from reaching live skin cells.
  • Dead skin cells make cosmetics go on unevenly.

There are many more and I could probably fill this blog with what a nuisance dead skin cells are but that is not the purpose of my writing today. I’d like to focus instead on the ways we choose to remove dead skin cells and the relative merits of some methods. For one thing, many people do not know what is in a product if it is called an exfoliant or exfoliator. And that is because all that means is that it removes the dead skin cells. It doesn’t tell you in the name how it does it.

There are a lot of ways. Some of the most common are the put-on-peel-off masks. Those basically adhere to your skin and when you pull them off you take off a layer of dead skin. Then there are the abrasives. These work exactly like a gentle sandpaper. They have tiny beads, crystals, or other material in the cream and you apply it to your skin to remove the imperfections.

Then there are the peels. These can be formulated from fruit acids or various chemicals that peel away the top layer of skin. Some of these procedures have to be done in a doctor’s office and take weeks to heal. The gentler ones, made with Alpha Hydroxy Acid, are a natural fruit gel that smooth on and work by dissolving away the dull, dry cells and revealing the newer skin beneath. This simple method is safe to use at home and will not leave your skin red and irritated.

Our best AHA peel is made with 15% fruit acid gel and you only have to apply it, wait 2-3 minutes, and rinse off. Pat your face dry and apply your favorite moisturizer and your skin is fresh, smooth, and glowing!

Adult Acne and Skin Care

Adult breakouts can be tricky and can be caused by several things. If you are experiencing a typical “comedo” (pimple), that’s a pore that gets clogged and causes fluid to build up. Pore clogging can be caused by certain skin care products that aren’t “non-comedogenic” (typically oil-based products), heavier makeup, or by a layer of dead skin cells in the epidermis that bridge over the pore, blocking it. Exfoliation is the standard remedy for clogged pores. Another cause can be a bacterium, p. acnes, and typically a trip to the dermatologist and an oral antibiotic can address that.

The third possibility is a viral flare-up, which is consistent with stress. Contrary to popular belief, stress does not cause the typical pimple; however, stress can trigger an outbreak of a viral type blemish – similar to a cold sore.  The telltale symptom of these blemishes is that they are particularly painful. If so, you should talk to your dermatologist.

Exfoliation with retinol or glycolic acid unclogs pores

If you have standard comedos (from clogged pores), there are several recommended exfoliation products. A favorite is topical retinol facial cream, a Vitamin A derivative, which is also an excellent anti-aging wrinkle cream. Retinol works by increasing the cell turnover rate and helping shed the top layer of dead skin cells – which might be clogging the pores. ReNew Youth™ retinol cream is the strongest retinol cream (about 1.0%) that you can get without a prescription.

Another excellent exfoliator is 10% glycolic acid formulated as a cleanser. It’s not only an exfoliator but also cleans away excess oil and is very popular for managing blemishes. Exfoliate Me™, is a best seller.

Do you have dry skin or does it tend to be on the oily side, especially on your chin area?  If you have dry skin, both the retinol and the glycolic acid can be drying. The ReNew Youth formulation anticipates this, so it includes the highly successful moisturizer, hyaluronic acid. Some ladies with very dry skin who use the retinol cream, however, like to augment it with a separate moisturizer such as Maximum Moisture™. If you use the glycolic acid cleanser and have dry skin, you’ll definitely want to use a good moisturizer.

If you have skin or areas that tend to be oily, this can sometimes be caused, unusual as it may sound, by dry skin. This is because when skin doesn’t have enough moisture, it overcompensates by producing excess oil – which can lead to those comedos (pimples) if a pore gets clogged.

Importantly, all of our skin care products are formulated without parabens or other estrogenic compounds, so there’s no health risks for women.

What’s the Key to Beautiful Skin?

Although “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” scientific research has determined the basic parameters for beauty. When it comes to skin, this research has found three key factors:

  • Youthfulness
  • Clarity
  • Smoothness

Since these are the three keys to beautiful skin, here’s how to obtain each one:

Youthful Skin

Skin that’s youthful is free of lines and wrinkles. Although everyone accumulates wrinkles as they age, that doesn’t mean you have to continue living with them. One of the best ways to get rid of wrinkles and reclaim your youthful skin is to use a night repair cream. An option like Nocturne™ Night Repair Crème can literally take years off of your appearance. All you have to do is apply this cream to your face before you go to bed and let it work through the night.

Once you apply the cream and get in bed, this luxurious repair cream will begin to work as you drift off to sleep. Because Nocturne uses a rich formula, you can depend on it to stay applied to your face throughout the night. Thanks to ingredients like squalane, this night cream is able to go deeply into your skin and deal with the true source of wrinkles. And because it’s a paraben free product, you won’t have to worry about any unwanted side effects.

Clear Skin

Everyone wants clear skin. If your skin ever isn’t as clear as you want, it can make you feel extremely self-conscious. Even if others don’t notice, going out in public means you’ll constantly feel like people are staring at your blemishes. While it doesn’t feel good to have skin that isn’t clear, it’s actually quite easy to deal with this issue.

The first step is to use a quality daily cleanser. A cleanser that features rosehip seed oil is powerful enough to rid your skin of unwanted blemishes, but also gentle enough to avoid irritating even the most sensitive of skin. For the best results, you will want to complement the cleanser with an exfoliating product such as a glycolic facial cleanser. This will provide you with the full cleansing impact you need to ensure your skin always has the clarity that you desire.

Smooth Skin

The last key to beautiful skin is smoothness. This means more than having fewer wrinkles; it means no sagging or uneven surfaces. Skin can be completely clear, but if it isn’t smooth, it’s going to fall short of its full potential. Peptide 6™ Wrinkle Cream is one of the best ways to ensure that skin is able to look younger thanks to being as smooth as possible. One of the reasons that peptides are a superior solution for delivering smooth skin is because they are able to actually stimulate the production of collagen. This means that instead of simply trying to deal with rough spots on the surface of the skin, a good peptide wrinkle cream will get to the true cause of the issue by building collagen. And since this type of peptide cream also features moisturizers, you will be thrilled with the smoothness of your skin.

By taking this three-pronged approach to caring for your skin, you’ll be able to enjoy truly beautiful skin for many years!

Glycolic Acid cleanser has multiple benefits

Many people use our Exfoliate Me™ cleansing gel as just a cleanser, but it goes beyond giving your face a good cleaning. The glycolic acid is an excellent skin exfoliator as it removes the uppermost layer of old, dead skin cells.  This exfoliation process is very effective at removing old skin cells that may have covered over skin pores. Since clogged pores are a notorious cause of acne, glycolic acid exfoliation helps keep acne from forming. And because the exfoliation increases your skin cell turnover rate, the healing process is accelerated – this helps diminish existing acne (pimples) faster.

A glycolic acid cream or gel is also very effective for fading age spots and skin discoloration. It helps boost collagen formation and skin elasticity as well.

Which skin exfoliation product is best for you?

Mango Madness Skin Care offers 4 different exfoliators. Two are Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) gels and two are facial scrubs. The two AHA gels are the 10% glycolic acid Exfoliate Me™ cleanser, and the Exfoliation Plus+™15% fruit acid gel. The two face scrubs are the gentle amber crystal scrub, and the more aggressive exfoliating cream.

If you have dry skin, you’re better off using the scrubs, because the AHA skin exfoliation products can be drying.  If you have normal or combination skin, you can typically use either kind of exfoliation product, although if you have sensitive skin, stay with either the amber face scrub or the 10% glycolic acid gel cleanser (Exfoliate Me™).

No matter which exfoliator you use, you are removing the top layer of old, dead skin cells. Although you do want to remove this top layer to promote collagen growth and allow your skin to accept skin care creams more readily, these old skin cells do offer a small measure of protection from sunlight. So, after exfoliating, be sure to wear a good broad spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30.

How to manage age spots with glycolic acid skin care

Your doctor may call them “wisdom spots,” but they typically are caused by the cumulative effects of ultraviolet radiation from sunlight after years of exposure. Age spots start small and grow larger with time, but often they seem to appear overnight!

For prevention, it’s important to use a good broad spectrum sunblock with UVA/UVB protection and an SPF of 15 or better. Cleansing and moisturizing your skin is also recommended to delay the onset of age spots.

To help eliminate existing age spots, use a good glycolic cleanser (10% strength is best) at least 2-3 times per week for skin exfoliation. Usually, the 10% glycolic acid strength is gentle enough to use every day and you can adjust the frequency to suit your tolerance.

Remember, patience is required!  The glycolic acid will reduce or even eliminate your age spots, but a dedicated skin care routine and sufficient time is needed.

Glycolic acid exfoliation yields immediate benefits for your skin

Due to its ability to penetrate skin layers efficiently, many skin care products contain glycolic acid. Typically, it is used to exfoliate or peel skin. Consumer preparations of glycolic acid typically contain concentrations up to 20 percent. Above that level, due to the possibility of skin irritation, the application of glycolic acid should be performed by a dermatologist. These doctors will use preparations containing up to 70% glycolic acid.

This popular exfoliating agent will remove older, dead skin cells on the surface of your skin to reveal younger looking, newer skin. Many people like the fact that glycolic skin exfoliation offers instant benefits – as soon as you wash it off, your skin will feel much smoother and softer.

Exfoliation with any good product, including abrasion scrubs, has the added benefit of allowing your wrinkle creams and moisturizers to penetrate more deeply where they will do the most good.
